James C. Milton is an experienced trial and appellate attorney. As a former banker, Mr. Milton has devoted much of his time to commercial disputes. Mr. Milton is listed in Best Lawyers in America in Commercial Litigation (2010-12).
In the past decade, Mr. Milton’s practice has focused on trust and estate litigation, including probate, will contests, guardianships, and prosecuting and defending claims of financial exploitation of vulnerable adults. In 2011, Mr. Milton was the only Oklahoma lawyer listed under State and Trust Litigation in the Oklahoma Super Lawyers publication. In addition, Mr. Milton is listed in Best Lawyers in America in Trust and Estate Litigation (2012).
Mr. Milton has also developed a water law practice that includes defending developers and municipal utility authorities against claims asserted by rural water districts. He is counsel of record in a number of reported decisions on the issue. Mr. Milton is listed in Best Lawyers in America in Municipal Litigation (2012). This work, when combined with his business and banking background, a degree in finance and economics, and a decade of legal representation of municipalities, have put Mr. Milton in a position to advise municipal corporations on wholesale water contracts. Mr. Milton is an associate member of the Oklahoma Association of Municipal Attorneys, Inc.
Mr. Milton has served as panelist, moderator, speaker, or organizer in more than 50 continuing education seminars on issues including trust administration, water rights and creditor rights.
In 2011, Mr. Milton received the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Golden Gavel Award on behalf of the OBA Civil Procedure & Evidence Code Committee, which he has chaired since 2006. Mr. Milton twice served as chair of the Tulsa County Bar Association’s Continuing Legal Education Committee, earning a President’s Award in 2009.
The Journal Record listed Mr. Milton as one of its “Achievers Under 40” in 2006 and its “Leadership in the Law” in 2009.
In 1995, Mr. Milton graduated, with honors, from The University of Texas School of Law. While in law school, he served as Executive Editor of the Texas Law Review. Mr. Milton holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with majors in finance and economics.
